There is no significant consumption of jamon and Parmesan in Russia, told RIA Novosti Executive Director of Rusprodsoyuz Dmitry Vostrikov, commenting on the idea to ban the import of meat and dairy products for personal use.

"It’s not worth talking about any noticeable consumption of jamon and Parmesan in our country. Perhaps, Parmesan in the category of cheeses occupy a larger share, as for jamon - many of my friends when travel abroad, looked what it is on the Internet. Therefore, there are no urgent problems and more or less significant volumes of consumption of these products - they simply do not exist", - said Vostrikov.

At the same time he noted that the probability of deliveryof dangerous diseases in products of animal origin through their transportation in luggage is extremely difficult to estimate. "There can be some percentage of the threat of introduction of the pathogen hypothetically, but it is very difficult to say how much it increases the risk of livestock disease an industrial enterprise in Russia", said the interviewee of the agency.

In March, the National Meat Association (NMA) sent a letter to the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Alexey Gordeev with a proposal to instruct the Rosselkhoznadzor to impose a ban on the import of meat and dairy products to the Russian Federation for personal use (except for infant formula and baby food). According to the letter, which is available to RIA Novosti, the Association also proposed to strengthen the control of luggage and hand baggage at the border.

The NMA explained the need for the introduction of these measures by the growth of the risks of importation of infectious animal diseases from abroad into the country, as well as poor prognosis of further spread of African swine fever (ASF). The Ministry of agriculture of the Russian Federation reported that the proposals of the Association are being considered, the Rosselkhoznadzor supported the initiative.

On Tuesday President of agro-industrial holding "Miratorg" Victor Linnik told Forbes that he supports the ban on the import of meat and dairy products for personal use from abroad. According to Linnik, "the society needs to think about the development of own country, not about jamon and Parmesan."
