This was told by Ekaterina Zakharova, a leading analyst of Dairy Intelligence Agency (DIA) at the plenary session of the IV All-Russian Dairy Forum "Vologda - the dairy capital of Russia".

According to DIA, exports of dairy products from Russia in terms of milk in January-August 2021 amounted to 206 thousand tons, an increase of 15.5% (+27.7 thousand tons) compared to the corresponding period in 2020.

At the same time, the import of dairy products in terms of milk increased by 2.5% to 2.5 million. Imports increased due to increased purchases of cheeses and cottage cheese, in terms of milk, imports of cheeses and cottage cheese in January-August 2021 amounted to 1.9 million tons, 12.7% more than in 2020.

Milk production (in agricultural enterprises and peasant farm holdings) in January-August 2021 amounted to about 14 million tons, 1.6% more than in 2020.

The total volume of the milk market in Russia in January-August 2021, taking into account milk production and imports of dairy products in terms of milk and excluding exports of dairy products in terms of milk, amounted to 16.4 million tons, 1.6% more than in the corresponding period of 2020.

The volume of exports of dairy products from Russia is still very modest. At the same time, Ekaterina Zakharova noted that export is the only way to preserve and develop the Russian dairy industry against the background of an inevitable decline in demand in the domestic market.

‘Taking into account the fact that the consumption of dairy products on the Russian market will decrease due to a decrease in the population primarily and other factors, Russia needs other markets for the development of the dairy industry, it is necessary to develop export infrastructure, conclude agreements on a free trade zone with other countries, promote Russian dairy products,’ Ekaterina Zakharova concluded.
