The Motor Rally 'Way for Milk' Made It to Crovalley Holsteins

Crovalley Holsteins is located in Hastings, ON, Canada and has been in operation for nearly 150 years. It is owned and operated by John and Cynthia Crowley, along with their two sons and their spouses, Justin (Meghan) and Ryan (Brittany), The DairyNews reports.
They milk 100 Holstein cows in a Lely robotic facility that has been in operation since February 2017. Prior to that, they milked in a tie-stall barn. The tie-stall has been converted to a calf nursery with individual pens for 30 calves and 4 larger group pens. There is a new heifer facility for heifers aged 5 months until calving that was built in 2013. The show heifers are housed in a separate facility that allows us to feed and manage them individually.

The Crowley’s run 1500 acres of crops – 650 acres of soybeans, 400 acres of corn, and 450 acres of hay. The cows are fed a TMR ration of corn silage, haylage, high-moisture corn, protein supplement and mineral. The dairy barn is a 6 row, perimeter feed, sand-bedded free-stall barn that can house up to 200 head. It is equipped with 2 Lely A4 robots, with room to add a third, a Lely Juno feed pusher, Futuro manure pump, Houile alley scrapers, Iso-cell curtains, Jourdain headlocks, Schurr cow brushes, and 8 Big Ass fans. There are 22 convertible free-stalls behind the robots for show cows, fresh cows, and special needs cows, as well as a straw maternity pack and 4 individual box stalls for show cows.

Average milk production is 38L/cow/day and SCC is 150,000. Fat is 4.1% and protein is 3.4%. Nearly half the herd is currently milking in their 3rd or more lactation. Current herd classification is 31 multiple excellent, 20 excellent, 97 very good, and 19 good plus. Many high-type cows are put on a flush program and their embryos are shipped internationally. Crovalley Holsteins has been awarded the top award in Canada for type and production, the Master Breeder Shield, twice. They have had many All-Canadian and All-American nominations over the years and top placings at the Royal Winter Fair and World Dairy Expo.

Crovalley’s goals are to keep improving herd genetics by using top proven sires and to be able to sell the best quality live cattle and to market embryos internationally. Their philosophy is to have a “work – life” balance, enjoy family and grandchildren, and pass on a successful farm onto the next generation.
