The Kremlin does not link the rise in food prices with inflation. Press secretary of the president Dmitry Peskov noted that the international situation affects many processes in the economy, but not all.

‘As for our domestic agricultural production, from which the simplest food products are made<...>, this is difficult to explain by various inflationary and so on processes,’ he explained.

Last week, Vladimir Putin drew attention to the rise in the cost of basic products, stressing that ‘the pandemic has nothing to do with it.’ The head of state noted the increase in prices for sugar, sunflower oil, flour, and pasta, calling it an attempt to adjust domestic prices to world prices.

During a meeting with the Ministers, the President demanded the issue of prices to be resolved within a week. As Putin stressed, he is not satisfied with the government's "hopes" that the situation "will stabilize next week."

Head of the Cabinet of Ministers Mikhail Mishustin also criticized the ministers and deputy prime ministers, an interdepartmental group is formed in the government to solve the problem.

According to the Minister of agriculture Dmitry Patrushev, business "shows its social mood" and is ready to respond to proposals to reduce food prices.

Today, some media outlets, citing sources, wrote that since January 1, Russia might fix purchase and retail prices for sugar and sunflower oil.
