How to minimize the risk of making poor-quality decisions based on primary data, the reliability of which does not exceed 60%, was discussed at the First International Conference on Digitalization of Agriculture and Organic Production, writes The DairyNews.

Ivan Perov, a specialist in herd management at DeLaval, believes that for the introduction of robotic milking systems, it is first necessary to change the management system on farms. All processes, in his opinion, should work to serve the needs of the cow - its comfort and minimization of stress. Therefore, all decisions should be made only based on daily data for each cow, which will eventually lead to productive longevity of the entire herd.

However, according to the expert, when collecting data, especially primary data, there are many problems that he does not see a solution to.

‘One of the difficulties of collecting and analyzing data in dairy farming and when working with dairy cows in particular, is the quality of primary data for subsequent processing,’ said the specialist. ‘As part of my dissertation, I analyzed 10 farms. Cleaning of primary data, despite the fact that they are collected from sensors that are on the milking equipment, is 60%. That is, the reliability of the data that we collect at the primary level is quite low.’

The speaker also noted the human factor, as a result of which it is quite difficult to modernize the farm management system and milk production.

‘A person manually enters the received data into the farm management program, which does not exclude errors,’ the expert concluded. ‘This is one of the problems that I do not see a solution to. I cannot answer how to minimize the risk of making a poor-quality decision based on inaccurate primary data.’
