In January-March 2021, Russia exported 5.6 thousand tons of ice cream, which is 13% more than the same period last year. Export revenue increased by 61% to $ 14 million, reported in the press service of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Agroexport to The DairyNews.

The growth is mainly due to an increase in shipments to non-CIS countries. The main driver was the supply of ice cream to the United States, which increased 3.7 times to 1.9 thousand tons in the amount of 4.7 million dollars. The export of these products to the United States has been developing in recent years, and at the beginning of 2021, this country became a leader among buyers of Russian ice cream.

The second among importers is China, which increased imports by 43% to 576 tons in physical terms and by 66% to $ 2.6 million in value. In March 2021, China once again expanded the list of Russian suppliers of ice cream, as a result of which at the moment, according to the Rosselkhoznadzor, 48 enterprises have the right to export.

The physical volume of exports to Kazakhstan in January-February decreased by 57% to 986 tons, the value - by 17% to $ 2 million. As a result, Kazakhstan currently occupies the 3rd place among buyers of Russian ice cream, but when statistics on the EAEU for March appear, this situation may change.

Mongolia and Ukraine - traditional buyers of Russian ice cream in recent years - are also in the top 5 importers. Shipments to Mongolia amounted to 559 tons (+54%) worth $ 1.4 million (+74%), to Ukraine – 260 tons (+24%) worth $ 692 thousand (+31%).

Korenovsky Dairy and Canning Plant, one of Russia's leading ice cream exporters, increased its exports in the first quarter by 20% year-on-year in physical terms and by about 50% in monetary terms. Shipments to the United States doubled. ‘Supplies to the United States are steadily developing and the geography is expanding. Ice cream is consumed a lot in this country, especially in southern states such as Florida or California, and in our opinion, our ice cream wins in quality. But the main consumers are still immigrants fr om the countries of the former USSR,’ said Igor Moskovtsev, General Director of Korenovsky Dairy and Canning Plant, to Agroexport. The ice cream produced by the company was also sent to Abkhazia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan and a number of other countries in 2021.

Moskovtsev noted that for the export the same range is offered, which is also sold within the country. ‘The most Russian type of ice cream is a cup, abroad it is called "Russian cup". Therefore, this category is always the base product. Also, the traditional Russian can be called Lakomka, the delicacy, which is in demand among those who were born in the post-Soviet space. More familiar things for foreigners are horns, as well as ice cream with different combinations of flavors,’ Moskovtsev said.

The Covid-19 pandemic and its associated quarantine restrictions have negatively affected impulse purchases of ice cream, while at the same time led to an increase in its consumption at home. In 2020, the global ice cream market was $ 65.8 billion, according to the IMARS Group. According to its forecast, for the period 2020-2025, the average annual growth rate will be 7.8%, bringing the market volume to $ 98 billion by 2025. The analytical agency Technavio predicts an average annual growth rate of 3.18% in the period 2021-2025, the main part of the increase will be in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, wh ere, along with the growth of disposable incomes of the population, segments of the cold chain are developing and the availability of ice cream is increasing, including in areas remote from cities.

According to the ITC Trade Map, ice cream worth $ 4.3 billion was imported worldwide in 2019. The main buying countries were Germany (10.1% of the global volume), the United Kingdom (9.8%), France (6.6%), outside of Europe – China (2.4%) and the United States (2%). At the end of 2020, the EU states collectively increased ice cream imports by 3.5% to $ 2.5 billion, the United States - by 66% to $ 139 million, while China reduced imports by 11% to $ 92 million.

The leading ice cream exporting countries are Germany ($596 million in 2020), France ($550 million) and Belgium ($437 million). In 2019, Russia entered the top 20 world exporters with a share of about 1.2%.

Last year, 451 thousand tons of ice cream were produced in Russia, which is 8% more than in the previous year. Simultaneously with the growth of production, the export of ice cream is also increasing, which over the past five years has increased 2 times, from 13 thousand tons in 2015 to 26 thousand tons in 2020. Russia is a net exporter of ice cream; the level of self-sufficiency in the country with this product during 2015-2019 remained stable and exceeded 100%.

Within 5 years, the number of countries importing Russian ice cream has expanded from 24 to 35, including deliveries to Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Congo, and the United Arab Emirates.

Among the promising areas of supply, Korenovsky Dairy and Canning Plant considers the countries of South-East Asia. ‘The climate is warm there, and the demand for ice cream is traditionally high. For example, in the first quarter, despite the pandemic, exports to Vietnam were active in annual terms. We also plan to develop supplies to India,’ said Igor Moskovtsev. From the new directions, the company has received the right to export to Saudi Arabia, in addition, we plan to expand supplies to Europe, including through new categories. ‘Following the trends, we have created a line of ice cream without added sugar. This season we plan to develop sales in the domestic market, but in the future we should also add to the export range,’ Moskovtsev added.
