On May 11, 2021 Dairy Index DIA amounted to 29.84 rubles (about 0.33 euros)/kg (excluding VAT, fat and protein content 3.6% and 3.0% respectively), which is 1.3% higher than last week and 9.9% higher than in May 2020. According to the Index DIA application, the key factor in the index growth was an increase in the share of the import price in the calculation of the indicator due to the growth in the volume of imports of exchange-traded dairy products, while the growth of milk prices in the regions of the Russian Federation slowed down.

Prices for raw milk increased in Kaluga and Krasnodar regions. The decline in prices for raw milk was observed in Nizhny Novgorod and Tyumen regions.

The import price index increased by 0.9% to 36.82 rubles (about 0.41 euros)/kg, compared to May 2020 the index is higher by 9.6%. A key factor in the growth of the indicator was the increase in the share of the most expensive pair of exchange-traded dairy products skimmed milk powder + butter. DIA analysts have updated data on the volume of imports of exchange-traded dairy products according to the latest statistics of the Federal Customs Service. The volume of imports of skimmed milk powder, butter and whole milk powder increased, while the volume of imports of whey powder and cheese decreased. In calculating the import price, the share of the most expensive pair of skimmed milk powder + butter and the share of whole milk powder increased, while the share of the pair of cheese + whey decreased. The share of the import price in the calculation of the Dairy Index DIA increased from 27.93% to 30.85% against the background of an increase in import volumes, which, even with an increase in milk production, was a factor in the increase in the Dairy Index DIA.

At the auction of Trigona Dairy Trade the price of skimmed milk powder increased, the prices for cheese, and butter remained at the level of the previous auction. The price of butter, taking into account the strengthening of the ruble compared to the previous auction, decreased by 0.5% to 354.2 rubles (about 3.96 euros)/kg, the price of cheddar decreased to 313.8 rubles (about 3.51 euros)/kg, the price of skimmed milk powder increased by 1.4% to 233.2 rubles (about 2.61 euros)/kg. The price of whey powder increased by 0.4% to 94.16 rubles (about 1.05 euros)/kg.

The 283rd auction of GDR (Global Dairy Trade) of May 4, 2021 ended with a slight decline. The price index for dairy products decreased by 0.7%, prices for butter and dehydrated milk fat decreased, and prices for milk powder increased.

The import price of a pair of skimmed milk powder + butter decreased by 0.13% to 39.65 rubles (about 0.44 euros)/kg (1 kg in terms of milk). The import price of a pair of cheese + whey decreased by 0.5% to 34.28 rubles (about 0.38 euros)/kg. The price of whole milk powder increased by 0.07% to 29.88 rubles (about 0.33 euros)/kg.

Dairy Index DIA

Dairy Index DIA is calculated based on two key indicators, the weighted average price of milk in the Russian regions and the Index of import price. To calculate the weighted average price, the Center developed and launched a crowdsourcing application Index DIA, which allows accumulating current data on the prices of raw milk in the Russian regions from direct market participants, producers and processors of milk. The Index of import price is determined based on the prices of key exchange dairy products – skim milk powder, whole milk powder, butter, cheese and whey powder. The prices of imported dairy products are based on the prices of dairy products of the Belarusian universal commodity exchange (BUCE) and the prices at the sites of Trigona Dairy Trade and GlobalDairyTrade.
