On October 7, 2019 Dairy Index DIA amounted to 26.22 rubles (about 0.37 euros)/kg (excluding VAT, fat and protein content 3.6% and 3.0% respectively), which is 0.34% higher than at the beginning of last week and 12.9% higher than at the beginning of October 2018. The rise in the index was caused by higher import prices due to rise in prices for exchange-traded dairy products and the weakening of the ruble, as well as the increase in prices for raw milk in Russian regions last week, according to the application Index DIА.

According to the application Index DIA the weighted average price of milk in Russia last week increased by 0.3% to 24.77 rubles (about 0.35 euros)/kg, which is 13.7% higher than the price in early October in 2018. Prices for raw milk increased in the Republic of Tatarstan, Kursk, Ulyanovsk and Tyumen regions.  The decline in prices for raw milk was observed in Altai region, the Udmurt Republic and in Samara region.

It is worth reminding that to get access to information about the prices for raw milk in all regions of Russia, users need to be registered on the page of the application Index DIA and enter current data on the price of raw milk on a weekly basis: http://www.dairynews.ru/company/country/russia/index/

The import price index increased by 1.13% compared to last week to 30.48 rubles (about 0.43 euros)/kg, compared to early October 2018, the growth of the index was 9.3%. The growth was due to the growth of prices for exchange-traded dairy products and the weakening of the ruble. Last week at the Dutch exchange Trigona Dairy trade, prices of skim milk powder whey powder increased, prices of cheese and butter remained at the level of previous trading. The price of butter taking into consideration the weakening of the ruble increased by 1.3% to 253.11 rubles (about 3.56 euros)/kg, the price of cheddar increased 224.6 rubles (about 3.16 euros)/kg, the price of skim milk powder increased by 3.5% to 167.6 rubles (about 2.36 euros)/kg. The price of whey powder increased by 3% to 45.63 rubles (about 0.64 euros)/kg.

At the 245th auction of the GDT (Global Dairy Trade) on October 1, 2019, the price index for dairy products continued to grow, but the growth rate slowed and amounted to only 0.2%. The price of skim milk powder continued to rise, butter and whole milk powder fell in price, but taking into account the weakening of the ruble in the Russian currency, prices went up.

The import price of a pair of skim milk powder + butter increased by 1.1% to 35.58 rubles (about 0.50 euros)/ kg (1 kg in terms of milk). The import price of a pair of cheese + whey increased by 1.23% to 25.50 rubles (about 0.36 euros)/kg. The price of whole milk powder increased by 0.04% to 22.95 rubles (about 0.32 euros)/kg.

Dairy Index DIA
Dairy Index DIA is calculated based on two key indicators, the weighted average price of milk in the Russian regions and the Index of import price. To calculate the weighted average price, the Center developed and launched a crowdsourcing application Index DIA, which allows accumulating current data on the prices of raw milk in the Russian regions from direct market participants, producers and processors of milk. The Index of import price is determined based on the prices of key exchange dairy products – skim milk powder, whole milk powder, butter, cheese and whey powder. The prices of imported dairy products are based on the prices of dairy products of the Belarusian universal commodity exchange (BUCE) and the prices at the sites of Trigona Dairy Trade and GlobalDairyTrade.
