On October 19, 2020 Dairy Index DIA amounted to 28.25 rubles (about 0.31 euros)/kg (excluding VAT, fat and protein content 3.6% and 3.0% respectively), which is 1.5% higher than last week and 7.5% higher than in October 2019. A key factor in the growth of the indicator was the increase in the import price caused by an increase in prices for exchange-traded dairy products and an increase in the share of imports in the calculation of the Dairy Index DIA. Prices for raw milk in Russian regions also continued to grow, according to the Index DIA app.

The import price exceeded the peak in spring and reached 34.74 rubles (about 0.38 euros)/kg, the maximum of the last three years.

The import price index increased by 1.7% to 34.74 rubles (about 0.38 euros)/kg, compared to October 2019 the index is higher by 6.06%. At the auction of BUCE, the price of butter increased by 3.4%, the price of skimmed milk powder increased by 2.4%. At the auction of Trigona Dairy Trade, the prices for other exchange-traded dairy products increased. The price of butter, taking into account the strengthening of the ruble compared to the previous auction, increased by 1.2% to 315.5 rubles (about 3.46 euros)/kg, the price of cheddar increased by 5.9% to 310.9 rubles (about 3.40 euros)/kg, the price of skimmed milk powder increased by 0.9% to 201.2 rubles (about 2.20 euros)/kg. The price of whey powder increased by 1.8% to 66.76 rubles (about 0.73 euros)/kg.

DIA analysts updated data on the volume of imports of exchange-traded dairy products according to the latest statistics of the Federal customs service. The volume of imports of butter, whole milk powder and whey powder decreased, while the volume of imports of cheeses and skimmed milk powder increased. The share of the pair of skimmed milk powder + butter and whole milk powder decreased in the calculation of the import price while the share of the pair of cheese + whey increased. At the same time, the share of cheaper Belarusian products (except for whole milk powder) decreased, which also led to an increase in the prices of product pairs in the calculation of the indicator. The share of import prices when calculating the Dairy Index DIA increased from 26.9% to 28.9% due to a slowdown in the growth rate of raw milk production compared to the previous month, the volume of imports of exchange-traded products in terms of milk remained approximately at the same level, about 580 thousand tons. This was an additional factor in the growth of the Dairy Index DIA.

The import price of a pair of skimmed milk powder + butter increased by 2.5% to 36.96 rubles (about 0.40 euros)/kg (1 kg in terms of milk). The import price of a pair of cheese + whey increased by 0.86% to 32.98 rubles (about 0.36 euros)/kg. The price of whole milk powder remained at the level of 27.11 rubles (about 0.30 euros)/kg.

Dairy Index DIA
Dairy Index DIA is calculated based on two key indicators, the weighted average price of milk in the Russian regions and the Index of import price. To calculate the weighted average price, the Center developed and launched a crowdsourcing application Index DIA, which allows accumulating current data on the prices of raw milk in the Russian regions from direct market participants, producers and processors of milk. The Index of import price is determined based on the prices of key exchange dairy products – skim milk powder, whole milk powder, butter, cheese and whey powder. The prices of imported dairy products are based on the prices of dairy products of the Belarusian universal commodity exchange (BUCE) and the prices at the sites of Trigona Dairy Trade and GlobalDairyTrade.
