Dairy Index DIA has increased by 1.2% to 28.72 rubles (about 0.32 euros)/kg

On December 14, 2020 Dairy Index DIA amounted to 28.72 rubles (about 0.32 euros)/kg (excluding VAT, fat and protein content 3.6% and 3.0% respectively), which is 1.2% higher than last week and 7.3% higher than in December 2019. According to the Index DIA app, the key factor in the growth of the indicator was import price growth due to the growth of import volumes and higher prices for cheese and skimmed milk powder at the BUCE auction. Raw milk prices in Russian regions also continued to grow.

According to the application Index DIA, the weighted average price of milk in Russia last week increased by 0.38% to 26.11 rubles (about 0.29 euros)/kg, which is 3.45% higher than the price in December in 2019. Prices for raw milk increased in Stavropol, Krasnodar and Vologda regions. The decline in prices for raw milk was observed in Samara, Tula and Krasnoyarsk regions.

The import price index increased by 1.5% to 34.92 rubles (about 0.39 euros)/kg, compared to December 2019 the index is higher by 5.6%. At the auction of BUCE, the price of skimmed milk powder increased by 0.5%, and the price of cheese increased by 3.8%.At the auction of Trigona Dairy Trade the prices of exchange-traded products remained at the level of last week. The price of butter, taking into account the strengthening of the ruble compared to the previous auctions, decreased by 2.3% to 289.7 rubles (about 3.27 euros)/kg, the price of cheddar decreased to 285.2 rubles (about 3.22 euros)/kg, the price of skimmed milk powder decreased to 196.1 rubles (about 2.21 euros)/kg. The price of whey powder decreased to 70.4 rubles (about 0.79 euros)/kg.  

DIA analysts updated data on the volume of imports of exchange-traded dairy products according to the latest statistics of the Federal customs service. The volume of imports of butter, skimmed milk powder, cheese and whey powder increased, while the volume of imports of whole milk powder decreased. When calculating the import price, the share of the most expensive pair of skimmed milk powder + butter increased, while the share of whole milk powder and cheese + whey decreased. This led to an increase in the import price. The share of import prices in the calculation of the Dairy Index DIA increased from 28.23% to 29.68%, which was an additional factor in the growth of the Dairy Index DIA.

The import price of a pair of skimmed milk powder + butter decreased by 0.6% to 36.64 rubles (about 0.41 euros)/kg (1 kg in terms of milk). The import price of a pair of cheese + whey increased by 2.9% to 33.64 remained rubles (about 0.38 euros)/kg. The price of whole milk powder remained at the level of 27.48 rubles (about 0.31 euros)/kg.

Dairy Index DIA
Dairy Index DIA is calculated based on two key indicators, the weighted average price of milk in the Russian regions and the Index of import price. To calculate the weighted average price, the Center developed and launched a crowdsourcing application Index DIA, which allows accumulating current data on the prices of raw milk in the Russian regions from direct market participants, producers and processors of milk. The Index of import price is determined based on the prices of key exchange dairy products – skim milk powder, whole milk powder, butter, cheese and whey powder. The prices of imported dairy products are based on the prices of dairy products of the Belarusian universal commodity exchange (BUCE) and the prices at the sites of Trigona Dairy Trade and GlobalDairyTrade.
