On February 10, 2020 Dairy Index DIA amounted to 26.47 rubles (about 0.38 euros)/kg (excluding VAT, fat and protein content 3.6% and 3.0% respectively), which is 0.15% higher than at the beginning of last week and 2.16% higher than in February 2019. A key factor in the growth of the index was the increase in prices for raw milk in Russian regions according to the Index DIA application, while the import price decreased due to the strengthening of the ruble.

According to the application Index DIA the weighted average price of milk in Russia last week increased by 0.32% to 25.47 rubles (about 0.36 euros)/kg, which is 2.5% higher than the price in February in 2019. Prices for raw milk increased in Kaluga, Moscow and Yaroslavl regions. The decline in prices for raw milk was observed in Altai and Nizhny Novgorod regions.

It is worth reminding that to get access to information about the prices for raw milk in all regions of Russia, users need to be registered on the page of the application Index DIA and enter current data on the price of raw milk on a weekly basis: http://www.dairynews.ru/company/country/russia/index/

The import price index decreased by 0.3% to 29.13 rubles (about 0.42 euros)/kg; compared to February 2019 the growth of the index was 2.4%.  The decline of the index was caused by strengthening of the ruble. Last week at the auction of Trigona Dairy Trade, prices for cheese, skimmed milk powder and butter remained at the level of previous auctions, and whey powder slightly rose in price. The price of butter, taking into account the strengthening of the ruble decreased by 0.5% to 252.15 rubles (about 3.60 euros)/kg, the price of cheddar decreased to 231.4 rubles (about 3.30 euros)/kg, the price of skimmed milk powder decreased to 183 rubles (about 2.61 euros)/ kg. The price of whey powder increased by 0.12% to 57.7 rubles (about 0.82 euros)/kg.

At the 253rd auction of GDT (Global Dairy Trade) on February 4, 2020, the price index for dairy products fell by 4.7%. Probably, the results of the auction were influenced by the panic associated with the coronavirus in China, a key importer of dairy products. It is not surprising that prices for skimmed milk powder and whole milk powder have decreased.

The import price of a pair of skimmed milk powder + butter decreased by 0.12% to 34.13 rubles (about 0.49 euros)/ kg (1 kg in terms of milk). The import price of a pair of cheese + whey decreased by 0.42% to 26.12 rubles (about 0.37 euros)/kg. The price of whole milk powder decreased by 1.9% to 22.86 rubles (about 0.33 euros)/kg.

The new value of Dairy Index DIA will be published on February 17, 2020.

Dairy Index DIA
Dairy Index DIA is calculated based on two key indicators, the weighted average price of milk in the Russian regions and the Index of import price. To calculate the weighted average price, the Center developed and launched a crowdsourcing application Index DIA, which allows accumulating current data on the prices of raw milk in the Russian regions from direct market participants, producers and processors of milk. The Index of import price is determined based on the prices of key exchange dairy products – skim milk powder, whole milk powder, butter, cheese and whey powder. The prices of imported dairy products are based on the prices of dairy products of the Belarusian universal commodity exchange (BUCE) and the prices at the sites of Trigona Dairy Trade and GlobalDairyTrade.
