Dairy Index DIA exceeded 29 rubles (0.33 euros) / kg for the first time

On January 18, 2021 Dairy Index DIA amounted to 29.08 rubles (about 0.33 euros)/kg (excluding VAT, fat and protein content 3.6% and 3.0% respectively), which is 0.66% higher than last week and 11.3% higher than in January 2020. The indicator exceeded 29 rubles (0.33 euros)/kg for the first time. According to the Index DIA app, the key factor in the growth of the indicator was the growth of imports of dairy products, respectively, the increase in the share of imports in the calculation of the Index DIA, in addition, prices for exchange-traded dairy products and prices for raw milk in the Russian regions continued to grow.

According to the application Index DIA, the weighted average price of milk in Russia last week increased by 0.15% to 26.31 rubles (about 0.29 euros)/kg, which is 4.12% higher than the price in the mid of January in 2020. Prices for raw milk increased in Rostov, Moscow and Krasnodar regions. The decline in prices for raw milk was observed in Tula and Nizhny Novgorod regions.  

It is worth reminding that to get access to information about the prices for raw milk in all regions of Russia, users need to be registered on the page of the application Index DIA and enter current data on the price of raw milk on a weekly basis:

The import price index decreased by 0.03% to 35.09 rubles (about 0.39 euros)/kg, compared to January 2020 the index is higher by 9.9%. At the auction of Trigona Dairy Trade the prices of skimmed milk powder, butter and whey powder increased while the price of cheese remained at the level of last week. The price of butter, taking into account the strengthening of the ruble compared to the previous auctions, increased by 1.7% to 309.3 rubles (about 3.47 euros)/kg, the price of cheddar decreased by 1.3% to 286.8 rubles (about 3.21 euros)/kg, the price of skimmed milk powder increased by 1.8% to 206.2 rubles (about 2.31 euros)/kg. The price of whey powder increased by 2.3% to 77.5 rubles (about 0.87 euros)/kg. 

DIA analysts have updated data on the volume of imports of exchange-traded dairy products according to the latest statistics of the Federal Customs Service. The volume of imports of butter and cheese increased, while the volume of imports of skimmed milk powder, whole milk powder and whey powder decreased. In the calculation of the import price, the share of the most expensive pair of skimmed milk powder + butter increased while the share of whole milk powder and the pair of cheese + whey decreased. The share of import prices in the calculation of the Dairy Index DIA increased from 29.68% to 31.6% against the background of an increase in import volumes and a slight decrease in milk production, which was a factor in the growth of the Dairy Index DIA.

The import price of a pair of skimmed milk powder + butter increased by 0.03% to 36.89 rubles (about 0.41 euros)/kg (1 kg in terms of milk). The import price of a pair of cheese + whey decreased by 0.24% to 33.69 rubles (about 0.38 euros)/kg. The price of whole milk powder remained at the level of 27.48 rubles (about 0.31 euros)/kg.

Dairy Index DIA
Dairy Index DIA is calculated based on two key indicators, the weighted average price of milk in the Russian regions and the Index of import price. To calculate the weighted average price, the Center developed and launched a crowdsourcing application Index DIA, which allows accumulating current data on the prices of raw milk in the Russian regions from direct market participants, producers and processors of milk. The Index of import price is determined based on the prices of key exchange dairy products – skim milk powder, whole milk powder, butter, cheese and whey powder. The prices of imported dairy products are based on the prices of dairy products of the Belarusian universal commodity exchange (BUCE) and the prices at the sites of Trigona Dairy Trade and GlobalDairyTrade.
