Caroline Emond: Being informed on global trends help to foresee and manage the domestic situation

The General Director of IDF spoke about the program of the upcoming Global Dairy Conference, the perspectives of the dairy industry and programs for the sustainable development of the sector. In addition, The DairyNews learned about IDF's look at the growing market of plant-based products and asked the most important question: What should a dairy product be like to be called the product of the future?

“The general theme of the conference is ‘A Changing Climate for Dairy’. In other words, it deals with the work on climate solutions carried out by the dairy industry itself, and how the surrounding world – the political and economic conditions – currently changes due to national and international climate goals”, says Ms Kirsten Holm Svendsen, President of the Program Committee.

The program is already published. During the Dairy Leaders Panel several CEOs of dairy companies will showcase their visions for the global dairy sector over the coming years and discuss several strategies and visions of their respective companies to nourish the world with safe, nutritious, and sustainable dairy products.

“The panel will begin with CEO Peder Tuborgh, Arla Foods (Denmark), followed by CEO Phillipe Palazzi, Lactalis (France), CEO Jeffrey Lu, Mengniu (China) and President & CEO Rick Smith, Dairy Farmers of America (USA). The session will end with a panel discussion where top dairy managers will discuss the opportunities and challenges within the dairy sector. Dr Judith Bryans, lead of IDF Task Force on the UN Food Systems Summit (and IDF past President) will share the highlights of the Summit and the impacts on the dairy sector”, commented Caroline Emond, the General Director of IDF.

“Top experts in their field have been invited for the core of the three-day conference will be a wide range of dairy-related presentations and debates in six sessions with the following headlines: Food Safety, Processing & Technology, Sustainable Diets, Farming, Politics & Economics and Marketing. All sessions revolve around the conference theme ‘A Changing Climate for Dairy’”, the IDF representative says.

The conference will be in hybrid format. So all registered participants will receive a link to attend virtually if they cannot be in person in Copenhagen.

“Being well-informed on global trends, challenges and opportunities help participants to better foresee and manage their domestic situation. All IDF events are open to the worldwide dairy community”, told Caroline Emond to the interviewer.

IDF General Director also told more about a refreshed website version with new content such as the IDF School Milk Knowledge Huband Milk Tree. Also the Dairy Sustainability Outlook by IDF is posted, sharing the sustainable good practices in the dairy sector and the contribution of dairy to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and sustainable food systems.

“The covid-19 pandemic is influencing the out of home, cooking and buying habits. Protecting the integrity of dairy is vital, given that the production and placement on the market of nutritionally inferior imitations can pose potential health risks for consumers. IDF published an update to its Bulletin on the Codex General Standard for the Use of Dairy Terms. We organized an IDF Nutrition Symposium and for our members 4 technical webinars on Digital Dairy. IDF Annual Report will be published on October 13”, says Caroline Emond.

The expert has pointed out, that the global dairy market is growing. She also recommended to read the IDF World Dairy Situation Report 2020 and compare with the 2021 edition that will be launched on October 13, to see the market dynamics.

Commenting modern ecological problems, Caroline Emond told that IDF has always taken the climate change subject seriously. IDF has also published the first methodology for GHG calculation and currently updating it. IDF take part in the Dairy Sustainability Framework and new initiative: Pathways to Dairy Net Zero and also an active participant to the LEAP.

General Director of IDF also told about IDF opinion on dairy and alternative products: “IDF role is to share science-based information on milk and dairy. The nutritional benefits of dairy are well documented. Dairy has a crucial place in an healthy diets. Other food products are offered to the consumers. Consumers should not be miss-leaded on the products they buy and eat. Plant-based products are different than dairy. They are complementary in healthy diets”.

As Caroline Emond think, the dairy product of future must be safe, natural, affordable and sustainably produced. “Dairy is in good position to fulfill consumers’ wants and needs”, the expert concluded.
