Introduction of tax on “harmful products” should be scientifically justified and should not lead to unfair competition. This was announced by Unilever Vice President Sustainable Business and Communications Irina Bakhtina.
The government should define certain criteria for this kind of taxation, possible harm to health should be scientifically justified, said the expert. The criteria should also encourage innovations and start of production of more healthy products, but they shouldn’t lead to unfair competition and impact the business and the state budget. The government must guarantee investment of earnings into healthy nutrition programmes or investigations, the expert added.
Earlier it was announced that the Ministry of Healthcare plans to impose tax on a number of products with high level of fat and sugar, including carbonated beverages. Products containing palm oil may also be taxed.
