Ulrich Marschner: the optimism of the cheese producers gave way to melancholy

Ulrich Marschner, Director of strategic projects and business development of the company "Hochland Russland" during the international conference of the EAEU for the production and processing of milk noted that in 2017 the optimism of 2014-2015 in the industry of cheese-making was replaced by melancholy, reports The DairyNews.
"During the past year real incomes of population are not growing. The access to the level of purchasing power of 2014 has been delayed. Respectively, sales and production are not increasing," said Mr. Marschner.

According to the expert, this year the cheese euphoria of 14/15 has been followed by a decline.

"The price of milk in Russia was higher than in Europe by 15-17%. The price of cheese followed with a large margin. Effective demand, which would support higher prices for cheese is missing, resulting in the reduced profitability of cheesemaking," said Ulrich Marschner.

In addition, according to the expert, dissonance was formed at the market: the quality of new varieties of cheese is inadequate, and the quality of usual cheese is getting worse.

"The consumption of cheese is decreasing. There are two reasons: thinner wallet of the consumer and failure to consume because of the low quality. There is a development of the stereotype that "all cheese is bad." When the wallet is full will it break the stereotypes, will the cheese be consumed?" - asks Ulrich Marschner.

A similar opinion was expressed by Director of the Russian Dairy Research Center (RDRC) Mikhail Mishchenko: "The market is characterized by a reduction in the consumption of cheese and butter. By the end of 2015, we consumed 2.3 kg of butter and 5.7 kg of cheese per capita. Why is consumption falling? Not only due to the reduction of purchasing power. There is a very powerful PR company against the consumption of dairy products. Consumers are looking for other products containing protein. We need to develop a culture of consumption of milk and dairy products, and not to intimidate".
