Greenpeace has sent recommendations for the refusal of plastic bags to the Association of retail companies (ACORT). Chairman of the Presidium of the ACORT Sergey Belyakov announced today that such an initiative is being discussed in the Association, reports The DairyNews, citing the Russian branch of Greenpeace.

"We in ACORT have an initiative to take the obligation to refuse plastic bags. Not just to refuse selling them but to refuse them at all. This idea is being discussed, not everyone is ready for it, but this idea is present", — told Belyakov in an interview with RIA Novosti. He said that the replacement of plastic bags can be either bags made of natural fibers or paper bags.

Greenpeace supports the initiative and the day before sent recommendations to the Association to refuse plastic bags and reduce excessive plastic packaging. Among the priority measures, the experts of the project "Zero waste" distinguish the rejection of the use of problematic types of plastic (polycarbonate, expanded polystyrene, polystyrene, PVC, etc.), the reduction of disposable plastic bags, including packaging, by 50%, reduction of plastic packaging for fruits and vegetables by 90%, the introduction of reusable alternatives and solutions for reuse, encouraging buyers to use them.

""The largest retail chains in the world - Woolworths, Coles, Rewe — refuse plastic bags, and buyers support them. It's time for Russian retailers from ACORT to be bold and to overcome disagreements. The transition to reusable bags will help to get rid of dozens of tons of plastic debris that accumulates at dumps. Paper bags will not save the situation, because they are also disposable, and during decomposing at dumps emit landfill gas, which residents of the Moscow region now suffer from", - said the expert of the project" Zero waste " Greenpeace Alexey Kiselev.

The ACORT include the largest Russian retail chains: X5 Retail Group ("Pyaterochka", "Perekrestok" and "Karusel"), "Magnit", "Lenta", "Auchan" and "Dixie."

In November 2017, Greenpeace launched the campaign "Package? - Thanks, no!" on the refusal of plastic bags by supermarkets. More than 100 thousand people across Russia have called on the largest food chains to switch to nature-friendly reusable alternatives: fabric bags, eco-bags, woven shopping bags.
