Russian cows to be upgraded to give more milk

Dairy farmers proposed the Ministry of Agriculture to create a chain of genetic laboratories and breeding stations. It will allow to increase milk production and reduce dependence on imports.
According to Artyom Belov, SOUZMOLOKO Executive Director, production increase can be achieved by animals' productivity improvement.
Average productivity of a cow in countries with developed dairy farming reaches 10-12 tons per cow, what is almost twice more compared to Russian level.
Creation of a single "cows' database" and genetic experiments may cost 60 billion rubles, according to experts' estimate. One third of the amount will be paid by the business.
According to Yekaterina Zakharova, Center for the Study of Dairy Market of "The DairyNews" (CSDM) Analyst, Russia can just increase the cows population what will allow to increase the milk production extensively.
Russia has land resources for this compared to other countries like Great Britain or Netherlands, she explained.
