Russian “reverse” sanctions will increase competition on the domestic dairy market, but local dairy producers get a good chance to benefit.

Russian dairy producers are ready to produce camembert and parmesan in case these products are in-demand among Russian consumers. There are technologies and necessary equipment in Russia, but before the demand on Russian products of this kind was not high because of EU competition. This opinion was expressed by the Russian Dairy Union (RSPMO) and the National Dairy Producers Union (SOUZMOLOKO).

According to Lyudmila Manitskaya, RSPMO Executive Director, French and Italian cheeses will not be available in Russia for some time, but any Russian cheese factory can produce more than 100 kinds of cheese – this will be enough to cover the demand. The “vacant” part of the market will be filled by products from Belorussia, she added.  The expert believes, “food” sanctions will help Russian milk processors and producers.

According to SOUZMOLOKO estimates, import of dairy products from countries under sanctions totals 2 mln tons on milk basis. Andrey Danilenko, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the union also believes, Russian and Belorussian companies are able to cover these volumes.
