Production of raw milk in Australia in 2019 will decrease to 8.6 million tons
Since 2002, milk production in Australia has been steadily declining. Thus, in 2002, the volume of production was almost 12 million tons, and in 2018 decreased to 9.3 million tons. In 18/19 dairy year production fell by 7-9% to 8.6 million, and by 2020, according to the expert, it will fall by 2-3%.
According to Ms. Xu, the main factor in the fall of milk production this year is the drought, which dairy industry in Australia has repeatedly faced with. Over the past year, Australian farmers have faced great difficulties due to drought: livestock culling increased by 20% compared to the previous year. Herds are shrinking, many farmers are leaving business and water prices are rising significantly.
At the same time, the consumption of dairy products in Australia continues to grow. Consumption of drinking milk over the last year increased by 0.2% to 1.480 million tons, cheese – by 2% to 151 thousand tons, butter - by 0.9% to 52 thousand tons, yoghurts and other dairy products - by 0.7% to 214 million tons.
