The owner of the cheese factory "Russian Parmesan" Oleg Sirota expressed his opinion on the effectiveness of import substitution. He said what the counter-sanctions brought to cheese industry and why it is necessary to extend the embargo for another five years, writes The DairyNews.
As commented by Sirota, since the embargo was introduced a whole cheese industry has been developed. It is, first of all, about farm cheeses, artisan, handmade or, as they are called, craft cheeses. Earlier, there was practically not such a field – only a few enthusiasts were engaged in it. Now this is a serious industry, which employs more than 400 enterprises.

- In addition, due to the embargo there was a real destruction of public consciousness – people began to believe in farmers and domestic cheese. The stability of the trend is evident - cheese festivals and fairs are a great success. And in any grocery store there is usually excitement near the cheese rows. This suggests that the industry is developing and moving forward. We have very big prospects, - emphasized the cheese-maker.
Sirota added that the operation of the program "Family livestock farms" contributed to the development during the period of counter sanctions. He explained that most small dairies use milk from small farms. The positive trend of support from the state, including preferential loans, was also a good help. In Moscow region a unique program was developed to support specific cheese makers.

According to Oleg Sirota, the production volume of the cheese factory “Russian Parmesan” has increased from zero to 450 kg of cheese per day.

– I think the result of import substitution in the farm segment is obvious. Now the task is to make a breakthrough in production volumes, it is necessary to increase them. In general, we expect that in the coming years there will be plants that will replace the poorly replaced segment of the low price. I hope for the extension of the embargo for at least five years and then we will be able to talk seriously about the export of products and the overproduction of milk and cheese. This will be very pleasant troubles – concluded Sirota.
Earlier we wrote that on August 6 it was 4 years since the signing of the decree on food embargo by Russian President Vladimir Putin. From 3 to 5 August in Istra on the site of cheese factory "Russian Parmesan" there was held a cheese festival "Four years of sanctions!" More than 180 farmers from all over Russia took part in it.
