President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov appealed to Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev with a request to limit the circulation of milk powder in the country.
The request was expressed on Friday in Sochi at a meeting between the Prime Minister and the governors in the framework of the Russian investment forum.

"Dmitry Anatolyevich, I would like to say that in winter there is always a lack of milk, our Republic produces a lot of milk, and milk was always exported. This year the situation is as follows: there is no export, the price of milk is 5-8 rubles less than last year and, of course, it creates a big problem for the population. Dairy plants have bought milk powder; they reconstitute milk, produce dairy products. Therefore, without your intervention, this problem will probably not be solved, if we promote milk powder and products made of it, it will result in serious losses", said Minnikhanov.

Medvedev has charged to look into the situation. "I will give instructions to sort this out, because it is difficult for me to object to the arguments brought by the Head of Tatarstan. We still have to develop our dairy industry", he said.

"Yes, we have a common market with our friends, partners from the Eurasian Union, moreover, we cannot limit it by virtue of the signed agreement, but in the end we must think about our citizens," Medvedev said, specifying that it is inappropriate to block the supply of normal milk and open the market for milk powder only for the sake of compliance with economic principles.

Earlier, Minister of agriculture and food of Tatarstan Marat Akhmetov said that due to the "immense" import of milk powder and other dairy products, the demand for Russian milk as a whole has sharply decreased. As it was reported, in 2017 in Tatarstan there was produced 1.8 million tons of milk, which is 2.7% more than a year earlier. At the end of last year the Republic took the first place in the country in terms of milk production.
