Cheese consumption in Russia falls due to the decrease of product quality while production is increasing, said the Director of the Russian Dairy Research Center (RDRC) Mikhail Mishchenko at the conference "Prospects of development of cheesemaking in Russia. The area of Altai Krai and Republic of Altai" in Barnaul held in the framework of the Motor Rally "Way to milk!", reports The DairyNews.
"It's a myth that people don't want to buy cheese. They are ready to buy it, but only qualitative. And the future is for those industries, which will introduce technologies of new formation, bring new products to the market. We must admit that the consumer wants new technology and new products. So he is willing to pay more. Today instead of buying cheese, the consumer will go and buy meat," said Mikhail Mishchenko.

According to RDRC, in 2016, the production of cheese, cheese products and cottage cheese in terms of raw milk in the country increased by 33% - to 9.94 million tons. In some regions, the increase was even more significant, for example, in Altai region (growth by 36%) and Kaluga region (an increase of 242%). Manufacture of dairy products over the past year increased by 31% to 11.11 million tons, announced the data of RDRC Mikhail Mishchenko.

The expert also noted a trend of increasing competition in the dairy market. And here, according to him, the impact on the market of agricultural holdings is not as important as the production of high-quality and inexpensive product.

"Small-scale production units, which have the technology that distinguishes them from others, can grow into serious competitors. Today holdings do not pay attention to them, but in 10 years, believe me, the situation will change. In addition, in my opinion, it is the development of small-scale production that stimulates the development of rural areas", - believes the expert.
