Riverdown is a family farm of John and Karen Velthuis, which works efficiently in the local community and within the country. Farmers from Russia visited Riverdown in the framework of the Motor Rally "Way to milk!", reports The DairyNews.

Justin, a son of John and Karen Velthuis, is a geneticist of a new generation. At one of the fairs, he drew attention to the cow, to which buyers did not show much interest. After a while it became the fourth in the most prestigious exhibition of Canada "Royal winter fair" and the family of Velthuis managed to sell it for $65,000. Another calf, bought on sale, produced an offspring, a bull Blond. By the way, both purchases were made when Justin was only 16.

The farm is equipped with two Lely robots for milking. The farm population includes 28 highly productive cows, about half of which are in the first lactation. The room is built in such a way as to fit two more robots.

The family-run Riverdown farm has 700 acres of land, with alfalfa as the main crop. In addition, farmers cultivate grain for feed and sale, as well as corn for feed and silage.

The value of the land is between $12,000 and $14,000 / acre. Rental price - $500 / ha.

The farmers said that if the volume of milk production was high, it could be sent for sale. But a few months ago Ontario farmers announced if there is too much milk and it goes to be shipped, a fee will be charged for it. Therefore, farmers pasteurize fresh milk and production waste for calves, which are fed three times a day.

The farm employs five family members Velthuis and recently they have sold some pedigree cattle. Now crops and four cows that produce daily 38-40 kilograms of milk are for sale.
