A one year ban on import of dairy products from some countries will not provide import substitution as long-term and huge investments are needed for dynamic development of dairy farming. This is according to the Russian Ministry for Economic Development analytics. At the same time in case the embargo works the service estimates butter production to increase by 2017 by 15-20% (compared to 2013), cheese and cheese products – by 12-15%, whole milk products – by 9-12%. By 2015 the share of imported dairy products will total 23-24%, is said in the Ministry’s report. Before the embargo Russia imported around 12% of butter and butter cream from sanctions-imposed countries, as well as 10% of milk powder and 25% of cheese.
