Does your herd experience comfort?

Creating the best possible environment for your cows has a significant impact on their longevity. When the time comes to choose a floor surface, farmers often opt for the least expensive solution, grooved concrete. It's true that grooving provides the animals with traction, making them less likely to injure themselves.

But it's important not to overlook the fact that concrete is abrasive to cow hooves, and combined with other factors can lead to increased lameness-related issues.

However, there is an alternative: covering the concrete floor with a rubber mat. Mats offer a softer surface for a better grip, distributing the pressure evenly across the entire hoof and decreasing the abrasive effect of the concrete. Enter Interlock, developed by the Canadian company Animat. Interlock rubber flooring has provided excellent results in milking areas and every other area where livestock needs to move around. The company recently launched a brand new rubber Transition mat, specifically designed for animals weighing less than 500 lb. Animat also offers the Maxgrip mat, whose non-slip surface provides even greater traction. Maxgrip significantly reduces the number of falls where inclines are steep or additional traction is needed. Whether you use it indoors or out, you're sure to be pleased with Maxgrip.

When we talk about the best possible environment for your cows, we're also referring to their stalls, since that's where they spend 12-14 hours a day and do 70% of their ruminating (Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives). Animat offers two products to make stalls more comfortable: Animattress I, a foam mattress system covered with rubber from end to end, and Animattress III, an individual rubber pad. Cones on the underside of the Animattress III offer the firmness required to comfortably support the cow. It's easy to install and affordable.

In short, there's not just one single solution to improve your herd's comfort, but a variety of solutions that can help. Animat will put you on the path to achieving that goal. Try Animat and see for yourself!
