China will double imports of cheese by 2021

The share of China as a global importer of cheese will increase from 2016 to 2021 from 4% to 8%. The share of Russia will decline by only 1% and will make 8% of the world total volume, said the expert.




"The demand for cheese is expressed in small quantities so far, but the growth is quite fast and stable - it amounted to 16.7% in 2016. The consumption of cheese in China can be divided into two sectors: 80% of the total volume of imported cheese is used in restaurants for cooking pizza, burgers, pasta, bakery products; 20% is on the sale at retail," - said the expert.

China mainly imports mozzarella and cream cheese. By 2021, the volume of imports of mozzarella will be more than 75.000 tons, of cream cheese - more than 50.000 tons.




"China has no history of cheese, culture of consumption of cheese is not developed, but however, there is a slow growth of demand for it. The demand for cheese is mainly due to the expansion of fast food restaurants of Western style (Yum! Brands (KFC and Pizza Hut, 2.200 of McDonald's restaurants), and major Chinese fast food chains Wallace, Ting Hsin (Dicos), and Pala also use cheese as an ingredient when cooking dishes of Italian cuisine", emphasizes Veronique.

"The Chinese dairy market of consumers comes back to expectations – more brands, innovation, quality, but with customer expectations the competition is increasing and margins are decreasing in the market", - concluded the expert of the company GIRA.
